Polyclinics are a type of large clinic providing primary healthcare, which includes primary healthcare, outpatient medical treatment, preventive healthcare and health education. In Singapore, polyclinic doctors can refer patients to hospital for more specialised treatment and inpatient care if the need arises. Working alongside General Practitioner clinics in the private healthcare sector in Singapore, polyclinics are government clinics that provide some 20 percent of primary healthcare needs, serving mainly low income patients.
